Romantic thriller "The Perfect Guy" dominated the box office for the fifth weekend in a row for a movie featuring African-American actors in the lead roles.
The Sony and Screen Gems film is exceeding expectations at the North American box office, earning $25 million to $26 million opening after it earned $10 million Friday from 2,200 theaters.
According to the Variety review, “The Perfect Guy” is “a strictly by-the-books affair. Despite an appealing trio of leads, it seems likely to entice only those with an unquenchable thirst for thriller cliches.”
The movie, which boasts a modest $12 million price tag, is directed by David M. Rosenthal and written by Tyger Williams, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Sanaa Lathan plays the role of a successful lobbyist who had a torrid affair with a charming, yet dangerous stranger in the character of Michael Ealy. Thrill continues when her former boyfriend played by Morris Chestnut, resurfaces.
Ealy has starred in many Screen Gems films including the "Think Like a Man" series and "About Last Night." Meanwhile, Lathan starred in Universal's box-office hit, "The Best Man." Apart from that, she is also an accomplished Broadway actress and was nominated for her performance in "A Raisin in the Sun."
At number two is a horror thriller, "The Visit" by M. Night Shyamalan, distributed by Universal on behalf of Shyamalan and producer Jason Blum. The film grossed $9.2 million from 3,068 theaters Friday for a projected $21.7 million weekend.
Also out this weekend is Christian drama “90 Minutes in Heaven,” starring Hayden Christensen and Kate Bosworth, pulling in $742,000. The film is based on Don Piper’s 2004 biography about spending 90 minutes in heaven following a 1989 car crash.
Aside from that, Sony’s “War Room,” a faith-based drama, finished third with $2.2 million, as it generated a three-day total of $8 million, Deadline reported.
Broad Green’s “A Walk in the Woods,” starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte, earned $1.4 million on Friday with $5 million three-day total.
Other new movies at the specialty box office include Oren Moverman's homeless drama, "Time Out of Mind," starring Richard Gere, and Sleeping With Other People, starring Jason Sudeikis and Alison Brie.
