After running for two seasons, the sci-fi drama "Extant" starring Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry has been cancelled by its home network, CBS. Despite the TV cancellation, Berry has been tapped as an executive producer for the drama series, "Legalease."
TV Line reported that CBS finally decided to axe the first-ever TV series that Berry starred in after struggling in its two-season run.
"CBS, Halle Berry and the producers have decided to conclude the Extant story after last season's exciting and fitting conclusion," CBS Entertainment President Glenn Geller said.
"I am so proud of what we accomplished on Extant. This season seemed such a natural place to end Molly's journey that I, along with CBS, felt it best served the story to leave it there." Berry added.
It was also said that the series made creative changes including the addition of actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Berry's new leading man for Season 2. However, the outlet reported that the season 2 finale garnered 36 percent less rating that its predecessor in Summer 2014.
"Extant" revolves around International Space Exploration Agency (ISEA) astronaut Molly Woods (Berry). She went on a 13-month mission on space before she returned to her husband, robotics engineer John (Goran Visnjic) and their android son, Ethan (Pierce Gagnon). She and her family began to deal with the aftermath of her mission including her mysterious pregnancy.
"Extant" Season 2 ended with two-part episodes: Episode 12 "Double Vision" and Episode 13 "The Greater Good," which were aired on Sept. 26, 2015.
It all started after Molly's Humanich clone started shooting JD (James Dean Morgan), the cop who had been helping Molly. The clone wanted to acquire the amulet and stop Molly from killing the Humanichs. In the end, Lucy (Kiersey Clemons) betrayed her own kind and returned the amulet to Molly. It was also revealed that she died at the end of the episode.
Meanwhile, Deadline reported that Berry will continue working with CBS in "Legalease," a developing series. She will join fellow executive producer and the show's writer Steven Lichtman.
Created by Mickey Fisher, "Extant" was part of the network's summer programming and premiered on July 9, 2014. It stars Halle Berry, Mickey Fisher, Goran Visnjic, Pierce Gagnon and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. It was produced by Stephen Spielberg and his own production company, Amblin Entertainment.
