SyFy’s ‘Defiance’ Canceled After Three Seasons

According to Variety, SyFy canceled the hit sci-fi drama series 'Defiance' after three seasons. It is the second series to be axed alongside "Dominion,'" the TV adaptation of the 2010 film "Legion" starring Paul Bettany.

'Defiance' was a truly groundbreaking series, delivering an immersive, cross-platform experience that transcended the television screen in a way that viewers had never seen before. We are incredibly proud of the work of the extraordinary cast, writers, artists and designers - and especially showrunner Kevin Murphy - who together brought the rich world of 'Defiance' to life over its three season arc," Syfy said in a statement, as reported by Variety.

The sci-fi drama series "Defiance" made its make as an example of the successful crossover between online gaming and television series. It is produced by the collaboration between Universal Cable Televisions and Trion Worlds.

"Defiance" is developed by showrunner and executive producer Kevin Murphy, with Rockne S. O'Bannon and Michael Taylor. The first season premiered on April 15, 2013. However, after its smashing debut, ratings continued to slip and now the network has decided to take it to the TV chopping block. The outlet also reported that the "Defiance" Season 3 finale only got a 0.51 rating in adults 18-49, and 1.925 million viewers.

In a statement, Murphy expressed his gratitude toward the cast and crew behind the "Defiance" TV series.

"I got to collaborate with a group of stunning artists operating at the top of their game, and together we built a world. Because of that, there is no room for anything other than joy in my heart," Murphy said.

"Defiance" is set in the future time when humans and aliens co-exist in a transformed version of the Earth. The story follows former Marine Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler) who is now the head of an independent republic in North America. It was after an agreement was made between the humans and Voltans. He lives in the city of Defiance with his adopted daughter named Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), who is an alien.

After three seasons, "Defiance" capped off its storyline with Episode 13 entitled "Upon the March We Fittest Die." It was aired on Aug. 28, 2014.

Despite the loss of "Defiance" and "Dominion," in other news, SyFy renewed "12 Monkeys," "Killjoys," "Dark Matter," and "Face Off." The cable network also started to revamp its original slate of TV series with the upcoming premiere of "The Expanse" and "Childhood's End" this year, while 2016 will see the addition of "The Magicians" and "Hunters."
