Kate Middleton is widely known as the "people's princess." Aside from her lifestyle choices, she is often seen recycling outfits and shopping at common fashion brands such as Gap, Topshop, and Zara. But once in a while, the relatable royal steps up her princess game like she did at her first state banquet last night, as reported by the Daily Mail UK.
The royal event was held at the Buckingham Palace, in honor of Chinese President Xi Jinping who is in the U.K. for an official visit. All eyes were on the Duchess of Cambridge as she walked into the ballroom, wearing a floor-length gown in the color of the Chinese flag, and a sparkly tiara on her head.
The red dress, decked with delicate sequins, was custom-made by Jenny Packham, one of Middleton's go-to designers. It featured a round neckline, capped sleeves, and a satin sash that separated the fitted bodice from the flowy skirt.
But the main attraction in Princess Kate's outfit was the one sitting on top of her perfectly coiffed hair: the pearl and diamond tiara known as the "Lotus Flower." Prior to the event, there has been much speculation as to what tiara Middleton will choose to wear. People Magazine previously suggested that she will choose something small and light so as not to upstage the Queen.
The Lotus Flower, it seems, is the perfect choice. The famous headpiece was originally owned by the Queen Mother and was later given to Princess Margaret. It is a relatively small crown, with fan motifs and floating diamond arches.
It seems that Princess Catherine has put a lot of intelligent thought into her outfit. Aside from her red dress, the Lotus Flower tiara is also a nod to the Chinese culture, as the lotus is one of China's favorite flowers.
According to royal protocol, female members of the royal family must dress in evening gowns, tiaras, and family jewels. The Duchess also wore chandelier diamond earrings and two diamond bracelets, all on loan from the Queen's jewelry collection.
This was only the third time for Middleton to wear a tiara in public. She has previously worn the Lotus Flower during the Queen's annual diplomatic reception in 2013, and she chose the Cartier Halo tiara for her wedding in 2011.
Last night's affair was a momentous occasion for both Prince William and Princess Kate. It was their first time to attend an official state banquet held at the Buckingham Palace, marking their commitment to full-time royal duties. The sit-down dinner was attended by 170 guests, including Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.
