Sonos Play 5 Review: WiFi-Capable Device Has Ethernet Port, Power Connector, Sync Button Present; Orientation Sensor Automates Tuning-In

Sonos Play: 5, a portable, WiFi capable speaker is here.

Sonos tried to revamp their speaker line up and offer fresh faces to the growing portable speaker market. With a much improved design and much better quality, Sonos has released Play: 5, a portable, WiFi capable speaker that can bring much joy to an audio enthusiast.

Sonos Play: 5 is a well-designed speaker. There are no more physical buttons, as these were replaced by a capacitive strip. From here, one can easily increase or decrease the volume, as well as play or pause the music. In order to skip tracks, one simply swipes the strip either from left to right or right to left, The Next Web reported.

Sonos Play: 5 back-end speaker is simpler as it only contains the 1/8-inch line-in jack, an Ethernet port, the power connector, and the sync button. The previous design contains a headphone jack and another Ethernet port. With its reliable WiFi connection, the loss of the second Ethernet port is acceptable.

The Play: 5 also contains three mid-woofers and three tweeters, and for a better stereo separation, two sets of its speakers point outwards. It also weighs 14 pounds, which is unexpectedly heavy for a small speaker.

One interesting feature of the Play:5 is its orientation sensor. If one will have multiple Play:5, it will allow the speakers to automatically tune-in their sound with one another. This, however, depends on the orientation of the speakers, either horizontally or vertically.

Trueplay, which is a Sonos app, can automatically tune the speakers to the proper acoustics of a room. It then adjusts the equalizer settings to produce the best sound possible. The most clever design is the company logo because of the symmetrical symbol. It really does not matter if it is facing upwards or downwards.

The Sonos Play: 5 speaker will be offered in two colors: matte black or matte white, and will cost around US$499. It will hit the shelves on Nov. 20, according to Sonos.
