Sony Worldwide Studios has explained why Sony has no major titles lined up for the handheld console PlayStation Vita.
According to Game Informer, while talking about the flop of PlayStation TV, President Shuhei Yoshida of Sony's Worldwide Studios has also explained why Sony won't be making high-budget titles for Vita. Attributing consumer expectation as the main reason for this, he said, "We are not making games like Killzone Mercenary, big budget Vita games anymore."
He continued, "The expectation of the graphical quality and size of the world for these type of games have risen after the launch of PlayStation 4. The same thing happened with the PSP. People were so excited to be able to play PS2 graphics games on the go. After PS3 launched, expectations grew. The types of games on PSP were not as attractive."
According to a previous report in Polygon, Sony is said to be leaving the development of PlayStation Vita to third parties as it shifts is focus to PlayStation 4 and VR even if "Minecraft: PS Vita Edition" is said to be giving the handheld a helping hand.
On the other hand, even if Sony has already expressed that they will be focusing on PS4 and VR, this doesn't mean that PlayStation Vita is going away. According to Game Informer, Yoshida has mentioned that in the future, Vita will benefit from cross-buy games and Indies. Cross-buy games are games that are available to Vita for free with the purchase of its PS3 version. As an example Yoshida has mentioned "Volume" and "Super Time Force Ultra."
So, Yoshida is after all still feeling positive over the future of Vita, but he reportedly said according to Design and Trend, "But we have to see. Nowadays, still people are excited and using Vita very frequently, it's a great portable gaming system. As long as there is a demand, why not."
