Is "Dexter" making a television comeback anytime soon? The Showtime-produced crime drama last aired in 2013, but its official Twitter account may have recently hinted of a possible reboot.
The tweet, as seen below, comes with a photo. "His knife's freshly sharpened," the tagline reads. It was dated Nov. 26, in time for Thanksgiving.
The show's Twitter account has not been active except for merchandise advertisements, so when the photo was posted, "Dexter" fans instantly took the cue. To date, the tweet has garnered more than 600 favorites and more than 400 retweets.
Last August, Screen Crush reported that Showtime boss David Nevins expressed his interest in giving "Dexter" another try.
"'Dexter' is the one show that I would think about [continuing]. It's a question of when the timing is right. If there's a willingness to do it, I would certainly listen," Nevins reportedly said at a TCA press tour panel.
"Dexter" is a crime-drama series about Dexter Morgan, a forensics officer by day and a serial killer by night. He justifies his need to kill by only killing murderers who have escaped the justice system. It was based on the 2004 novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. Michael C. Hall played the lead role.
While Showtime has given no other details than the cryptic tweet, Nevins has previously said he is interested in getting Hall to play the lead again.
"It would have to involve MIchael. I would only do it with Michael," the Showtime executive said. He added, "It remains to be seen if they're going to want to do it. They never felt like killing Dexter is the right end. I think that show is that character. If we were to do it, I would want to do 'Dexter' in a new concept and configuration. I would want the show to feel different and not just be a continuation of the old show."
"Dexter" aired from 2006 to 2013, winning four Primetime Emmy nominations for Best Drama series. Its season finale, aired on Sept. 22, 2013, drew 2.8 million viewers, Showtime's highest rating to date.
