'The Big Bang Theory' Season 9 Spoilers & Updates: Amy And Sheldon’s Relationship in Focus, Blended With 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'; Bob Newhart Returns

The Dec. 17 installment of CBS' "Big Bang Theory" Season 9 will focus more on the relationship of virgins Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) who will finally have sex for the first time. The upcoming episode will also feature "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

The Dec 17. episode will show Sheldon, Leonard Hofstadte (Johnny Galecki), Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) and Rajesh "Raj" Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar) purchasing tickets for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," which will premiere the next day, Dec.18.

"The Big Bang Theory" co-creator Chuck Lorre and showrunner Steven Molaro talked about the episode in The Hollywood Reporter. Lorre described that Sheldon and Amy's relationship struggled this season. But their breakup led them to the decision of making their relationship more aggressive, realizing that "you don't know what you've got until it's gone."

"That happened for Sheldon - missing Amy was wearing on him in a way he hadn't anticipated," says Lorre.

Molaro also gave his statement about the upcoming installment. "They've been together on and off for over five years and it just seemed to be a good way to ultimately resolve this journey they've been on, including this break-up as well."

As mentioned earlier, the gang got tickets for "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Sheldon will have doubts on whether to ask Amy to watch the movie premiere with him since it was also Amy's birthday. Sheldon decided later to watch Star Wars together with Amy to celebrate her birthday -- a great move for Sheldon since they have broken up because he didn't make her a priority. Showrunner Molaro also expressed his excitement with the story lining up with Star Wars.

Meanwhile, fans might be thrilled to know that Bob Newhart, the Big Bang Emmy winner, will return. Newhart will regain his character as Arthur Jeffries and will appear in Sheldon's dreams helping him sort things out about getting intimate with Amy.

"This is a very important episode; this is what people have been waiting for for eight years," Newhart stated. "There's a cover of a magazine in my dressing room from season five that says, 'Will Sheldon ever have sex?' This is it, and this is the answer! It's wonderful seeing them - each time they rehearsed it, they had some wonderful and very funny scenes."
