Dick Van Dyke will officially turn 90 on Sunday, but fans already celebrated his birthday with a flash mob in Los Angeles. The dancers were wearing costumes of chimney sweeps just like his character Bert in "Mary Poppins". Dick was on his balcony watching from above enjoying the view of his well-wishers performance.
The film Mary Poppins is one of those classic that never gets old. The endearing Julie Andrews who played Mary Poppins to Jane (Karen Dotrice) and Michael (Matthew Garber) Banks. Yet even if Julie was the main star of the film, Dick Van Dyke also played an important role in the film, being Mary's sidekick. He plays Bert in the movie back in 1964, he was a jovial looking, singing and dancing chimney sweeper.
The crowd danced to the tune of Jolly Holiday with Mary, Chim-chiminee, Stepping Time and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious. These songs were from the Movie mary Poppins itself. The mob fans had a great time dancing and singing for Dick. After a while Dick went down from his balcony, he joined the crowd and sang the song "Let's Go Fly a Kite". The fans were holding kite shaped cards that says happy birthday! It was said that the event was also partly organized by his dear wife Arlene Silver.
Video footage during the flash mob event, shows Van Dyke can still rock it. He can still sing very well at his age. He even mentioned during his interview with Julie Ellerton of CNN, that he still likes to eat ice cream and candies. To Dick, age is just a number as he says he doesn't do anything that isn't fun. He is also a great comedian. During the 1960's, his show "The Dick Van Dyke Show" is one of the longest running show in America.
What a great age to celebrate with adoring fans young and old! Dick sure was pleasantly surprised by the gesture that celebrates another decade of his life.
