A man from Russia is suing Bethesda Softworks as well as its localization studio because of the "Fallout 4" game, which he claims to be ruining his life. Three weeks after the game was released, he said that he got so addicted to it that he lost both his wife and job.
The 28-year old guy did not got to work for "Fallout 4" and his company eventually fired him. Apart from that, he also disregarded his friends as well as his personal relationship; hence, lost his wife too.
Now, he is suing Bethesda for a total amount of 500, 000 rubles or around $7,000 USD in damage for emotional distress. As reported by Forbes, the guy said, "If I knew that this game could have become so addictive, I would have become a lot more wary of it."
This is considered as an unprecedented case for Russia, although not globally. Way back 2010, a guy from Hawaii named Craig Smallwood also filed a case after he got addicted to "Lineage II," racking up a total of 20, 000 hours of playtime as reported by The Register. The Hawaiian man said that he would not have started playing it if he only knew that he would get very addicted to the game. In the end, the case was acknowledged, which made the NCSoft, a South Korean published paid all his legal fees.
It is quite hard to know what a Russian court will do about this concern. However, on the surface, it is still quite easy to dismiss the said claim out of hand. More so, proving the level of addictiveness of the video game is still considered as more challenging. It is way different unlike testing cigarettes, which have their own specific addictive ingredient.
"Fallout 4" is still being played by a plethora of consumers from different parts of the world, who did not get addicted to the game to the point to the point of realizing that their whole lives have fell apart.
