Camille Cosby has been forced to testify in the civil case against her husband, Bill Cosby. According to the latest news, she is no longer protected by marital disqualification.
It may be very hard for Camille Cosby to testify against Bill as he is her husband. However, due to the decision made by the court, she has to provide deposition in the civil case of defamation filed by seven women whom he called liars after they accused him of sexual assault. Camille will be called to court on January 6, Wednesday.
Based on the report, US Judge Magistrate David Hennessey of Springfield, Massachusetts, said in his 12-page ruling that the Cosbys failed to prove Camille was protected. He said, "[Her arguments] do not outweigh the potential significance of Mrs. Cosby's testimony, nor has Mrs. Cosby provided any authority that they do."
A lawyer for the women, Joseph Cammarata argued that he also had the right to secure Camille's deposition since she can provide "information that's relevant to the litigation in this matter." Yet, Camille and Bill's lawyer rejected the claim and filed a motion to stop the subpoena last December 18.
The Cosby's lawyer explained that it is "nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt to pressure defendant in the face of subjecting his wife to the shame and embarrassment of responding to questions about his alleged infidelities and sexual misconduct."
Earlier, Camille already repeatedly mentioned that she will stand by her man no matter what happens. But the situation for her is not what she wanted to be in. She has to testify against Bill on Wednesday even if she already filed for a protective order to limit the scope of the deposition. The court has rejected her appeal.
Another report mentioned that she tried to approach Cammarata to agree on the postponement of the deposition but he refused. What Camille saw is that by law she should not testify against her husband and be questioned on his sexual proclivities in court.
Cosby's attorneys wrote, "Accordingly, Mrs. Cosby brings this emergency notion to stay her deposition so that the District Court may have a full opportunity to review the Magistrate's order."
Camille Cosby's deposition will start at 9 a.m. at the Mariott Hotel in Springfield, Massachusetts as said in the copy of the subpoena filed by Cosby's attorneys.
