World's no.1 Serena Williams and Danish tennis sweetheart Caroline Wozniacki could forge a new dominant partnership in women's tennis by teaming up as doubles partners in future tournaments.
In a column posted on Travelers Today, Serena's growing relationship with Wozniacki could be a start of something big in women's tennis since the Williams sister began dominating their peers from the early 90s to midway 2000s.
Wozniacki, who also once held the top spot of the WTA world ranking for two consecutive years, might be exactly Serena has been looking for all this time as she aims to bring back the glory days of her once booming doubles career.
If you are wondering how the heck in the world would Wozniacki replace Venus as Serena's doubles partner soon? Here's why.
While Serena has remained on top of her game in women's singles at the age of 33, her partnership with her big sister, Venus Williams, hasn't been fruity as of late.
After winning 12 Grand Slam titles together in an 11-year span (1999 to 2010), the Williams sisters has just won one Grand Slam (Wimbledon Open championship in 2012) in the last 18 major tournaments together and 0-for-9 in the last two years.
According to the writer, a significant drop-off in Venus' game in the later part of her career might be the big reason why the Williams sisters aren't anymore a fearsome entity in women's doubles play.
"Many analysts believed Venus' declining game due to various injuries might have ended the sister's dominance in women's doubles. The result, the Williams sister found their selves without a title in the last 9 Grand Slam tournaments in doubles play," according to Travelers Today.
After more than two years of struggles, the 24-year old Wozniacki seems to have recaptured her old groove in the later part of the 2014 season, as he capped her big run with a finals stint at the US Open Championship and semifinal appearance at the WTA World Tour Finals in Singapore two weeks ago. But aside from Wozniacki's recent form, her friendship with Williams could be a key for them to win more tournaments together as partners on the court.
"Unlike singles play where pure individual talent is needed to win, women's double does not only demand a strong skill-set but harmonious chemistry between the partners. As the friendship between Williams and Wozniacki goes even deeper, the more they are fitting to play together as doubles partner," the writer added.
Will Serena team up with Caroline to win more Grand Slams? Stay tune, it could be a very interesting turn of events in women's tennis.
