‘Downton Abbey’ Movie Rumors: Series Producers Are Definitely Talking about Taking the Crawleys and Their Servants to the Big Screen

After the telecast of the series finale of "Downton Abbey" was televised in the UK, rumors of a movie version have been going about and it looks like the creators and producers of the hit show are discussing this possibility.

The series ender episode of "Downton Abbey" was very successful in terms of ratings that is why the creators are not easily brushing off the idea of making a film version of the show. According to Independent UK, Gareth Neame, the series' executive producer, already confirmed his strong willingness to bring the Crawleys and their servants to the big screen.

The EP said that he and the show's creator Julian Fellowes have been discussing this possibility, and even he was on board the idea of a feature length movie.

"There is no script and no firm plan but it's certainly something there is talk of; we're not in denial about anything. We'll know more next year," Neame stated.

Although the producers are keen on making a "Downton Abbey" movie, they are no longer counting on the possibility of a season 7. All from the team agreed that they would end the show on a high note. This is why even though the series finale is the first time in two decades that the ITV network beat BBC in Christmas ratings, the creators will no longer shoot a new season.

On the other hand, in case the movie pushes through, Dame Maggie Smith, who plays Dowager Countess of Grantham, will no longer be a part of it, Daily Mail UK reported.

Earlier speculations claimed that Smith was part of the reason why "Downton Abbey" ended, although a network spokesperson confirmed otherwise. During the veteran actress' appearance on the "Graham Norton Show," she expressed her delight that Fellowes has finally ended the series. According to Smith, her character was just too old for the plot that it is losing its credibility.

With the production's plan to create the movie version within a 10-year window after the series finale episode, it would be more likely that the Countess, who is 81 years old when the show ended, will be dead in the setting of the proposed film.
