Gennady Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez, believes that his fighter has a good chance of landing a big showdown against Floyd Mayweather Jr. next year.
Sanchez is aware that Mayweather will likely face Manny Pacquiao in their long-proposed super fight next year. But if the Filipino boxing icon fails to impress in his upcoming fight against Chris Algieri, Sanchez is convinced that Mayweather will consider facing Golovkin instead.
"I think we have to wait on that one until the Algieri fight to see how good Pacquiao looks," Sanchez said in an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radio. "If he doesn't look good even if he wins, then it's not a profitable fight for Floyd."
Sanchez pointed out that Mayweather wants to earn big paychecks before he calls it quits. If Golovkin scores a convincing win against Martin Murray in February, fight fans will be interested in a showdown between GGG and Mayweather, who previously said that he might retire after two more fights in 2015.
"Floyd understands the business as well as anybody in the boxing business and if it's not a profitable fight and Golovkin does well against Murray, Floyd has got some decisions to make," Sanchez said. "Floyd's about making the biggest fights and if Golovkin is the biggest fight, I'm sure that he'll consider it."
Golovkin holds an impressive 31-0 record with 28 knockout victories. The reigning World Boxing Association and International Boxing Organization middleweight champion recently scored a second-round knockout win against Marco Antonio Rubio.
When asked about Golovkin's chances against Mayweather, Sanchez said that the fight will not be as easy as Triple G's fight against Rubio, but he is convinced that the 32-year-old Kazakh could also knock the reigning pound-for-pound king out.
"I don't think he would stop him like he did with Rubio, Floyd Mayweather is a heck of a fighter. Floyd Mayweather has proven that every time somebody speaks up, he shuts them up. He has 47 fights that he has won. We can talk all we want but until he steps in the ropes and we have to deal with Floyd, we'll find out. I am confident that Gennady stops him within twelve rounds," Sanchez said.
