Daisy Ridley, star of the new Star Wars movie "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," has been cast as the lead voice in the classic Japanese animation "Only Yesterday."
"Only Yesterday," a classic 1991 Ghibli film directed by Isao Takahata, will open for the first time in the US: January 1 in New York and February 26 in the rest of the US.
Ridley said, "I think the reason probably this is such a loved film and will continue to be so because it doesn't feel foreign. It feels exactly right, like, how do you make your dreams come true?"
She was cast as Taeko, a single 27-year-old who's lived her whole life in Tokyo. She decided to visit her family in the country and all throughout the film, she will be reflecting on her childhood through series of flashbacks to examine whether she's been true to the girl she used to be.
The actress also added that the human stories are so human even if the film is "fantastical," she said that the film endured due to the question of achieving one's dream which drives the main character.
"Only Yesterday" is not a fantasy which is different from the other films the Studio Ghibli has produced. This will be set in the 1980s with a plot revolving around Takeo's changes between her childhood and present life,
Because of the enduring plot, this is the main reason why this classic film became the number one film in the Japanese box office when it was first released in 1991.
The film is directed by Isao Takahata, a long-time director and filmmaker of Studio Ghibli.
