Episode 9 of "Rick and Morty" Season 2 takes on a parody of the movie "The Purge."
"Rick and Morty" always had success when its theme played on a movie parody. Morty loves the film "Inception" and the show made fun of it in an episode in its first season which contributed to its overall success as an animated adult-themed series. According to a review by Tulsa World, the latest episode of the show did another take of the parody theme and this time it is the movie called "The Purge." In this episode, the show focused on Rick's penchant for morbid stuff. He is a seasoned space traveler but he still cannot get enough of the annual festival wherein all manner of crime becomes legal for a night and no one will be punished for whatever they want to do.
Rick wants to see the whole event so instead of leaving the planet, he tries to convince Morty to stay. Morty on the other hand does not want to participate nor watch the gruesome affair but gives in to Rick's request. Things then take an odd turn as Morty decided to help a participant in the festival. Morty goes berserk on a killing spree as the participant turned on him.
According to IGN, this episode was really all about Morty and his pent up rage. Rick is simply a witness or an accessory to Morty's explosive blowout as he lets off steam from all the beating down and humiliation he has suffered through the years with Rick. But a much darker side of Morty may be coming out as it is explained in the show that his anger stems from being forced to sit down and read a screenplay that is so bad. This episode will go down as one of the most violent yet a very entertaining one.
