Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update: Samsung Galaxy S5, S5 Mini to Receive OTA Update

Samsung Galaxy S5 and Galaxy S5 mini are set to receive the over-the-air (OTA) Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update.

Samsung has actually started rolling out Lollipop to Samsung Galaxy S5 mini, specifically the SM-G800R4, according to GSMArena. Users who can't wait for the OTA update can download the firmware here and manually flash it.

T-Mobile has started rolling out Android 5.1.1 update to Samsung Galaxy S5 in July, while carriers such as AT&T, US Cellular, Verizon and Sprint are set to follow suit. Reports say that Samsung was prompted to immediately release Android 5.1.1 because of the insistent demand from Samsung S5 community, now that Android 6.0 Marshmallow has been launched by Google.

According to Neurogadget, the update comes with improved user interface, new notification options, device sharing, synching updates, and security patches. And one of the notable fixes is the StageFright security issue. It is an MMS bug which allowed hackers to control hacked devices.

While you're waiting for the update to be available for download on your device, use the time to ensure that you have enough space to install the update. The firmware is said to be around 640MB. Also enable automatic update so that you will be immediately prompted when the firmware is already available. When it arrives, it is better to be connected on a Wi-Fi network. Ensure that your device is fully charged. Just follow the instructions during the installation process. Your device might restart several time during the installation of the new OS.

Neurogadget said the following Samsung devices are already running on the Android Lollipop OS and are expected to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow when it is officially rolled out: Samsung Galaxy Mega 2, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Samsung Galaxy Core Prime, Samsung Galaxy S6, Samsung Galaxy J1 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
