Country music superstar Taylor Swift hopes to set an example for assault victims by lodging a counter lawsuit against a radio DJ who purportedly groped her.
Swift is counter suing David Mueller, a radio DJ from Denver, Colorado, for sexual assault which happened at the singer's meet and greet before her concert in June 2013. "Mueller did not merely brush his hand against Ms. Swift while posing for the photograph. He lifted her skirt and groped her," read the court papers acquired by ET.
The "Blank Space" singer was upset after the incident that she performed in front of 13,000 fans stressed about what had been done to her. Swift, who was 23 when the incident happened, felt uncomfortable since Mueller weighed over 90 kilograms and is more than six feet tall, reports ABC.
The Grammy-winning songstress is hoping for a trial by jury. The amount of damages sought by her camp, if she wins the case, will be donated to charitable institutions which help safeguard women's rights.
It should be noted that the radio DJ sued Swift first in September after claiming that he was fired from his job when the "Bad Blood" singer accused him of groping her. Her camp warned KYGO-FM, the station where Mueller worked at that time, of legal action if he wasn't dismissed from work.
From the lawsuit he filed, Mueller said he was wrongfully accused. He argued that there was indeed a touch incident but it was not him who did it. After the lodging of the countersuit, the ex-DJ's camp has yet to release a statement.
Defense attorney Michael Kraut, who has no relation to the cases, pointed out a curious argument. He claimed that the possible juries would question the 25-year-old pop star's failure to file a complaint right after the incident took place and not even immediately after Mueller sued her. Whether Swift is telling the truth or is just on defensive mode after the DJ sued her, "it starts counterbalancing the issues that are before the jury," Kraut commented.
