How Downton Abbey Is Going To End; Plus, Who’s Returning For The Finale and Christmas Special

"Downton Abbey" is about to end for good and details of the finale have been revealed.

"Downton Abbey" producers ITV and Carnival Films announced last Friday the casting details of the finale which will be aired in the U.K. on Christmas and in the U.S. in March.

The synopsis reads, "Mary endeavours to build bridges with her sister while Edith's secret continues to pose a threat, despite having nothing left to lose. As Henry settles into the role of husband and stepfather, finding his place at Downton proves more difficult. Below stairs, Carson faces some personal challenges, which prove that even he is not invulnerable to change."

"The last ever episode offers all the love and loss, happiness and heartbreak of Downton Abbey, and as the family and servants prepare to welcome 1926, they celebrate an unforgettable New Year's Eve together at the great house," the announcement further said.

Lily James is returning as Lady Rose, Matt Barber as Atticus Aldridge, and Peter Egan as Shrimpie (Lady Rose's father). Patricia Hodge is joining the cast as guest star and is going to play as Bertie Pelham's mother.

"Downton Abbey" production filmed at Alnwick Castle, Northumberland and at the Iconic Ritz in central London.

Other returning stars include Maggie Smith, Jim Carter, Hugh Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Elizabeth McGovern, Penelope Wilton, Samantha Bond and Phyllis Logan among others.

Carter told TVLine, "We do a job, we move on, that's the rhythm of our lives. But we shot the last scene that the servants do together - it was quite a sentimental scene - and at the end of it, I completely took myself by surprise by ... getting quite tearful."

The last "Downton Abbey" season ever will premiere in the U.S. on Jan. 3. The 90-minute final episode will air on Dec. 25 in the U.K. and on March 26, 2016 in the U.S. on PBS.
