"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" earned $75.8 million and topped the box office just over the five-day Thanksgiving weekend, followed by animated film "Good Dinosaur" and boxing drama "Creed."
In a report from the USA Today, the "Mockingjay - Part 2" $102.7 million opening was initially thought to be disappointing since it was the lowest opening among the four "Hunger Games" movies. However, the movie has already got $440.7 million worldwide, raking in $198.3 million in North America alone. The "Hunger Games" series is getting close to $3 billion in total since it was launched in 2012.
"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2" is the final installment of Lionsgate's popular film franchise starring Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen.
On the other hand, Pixar's second animated movie for this year, "Good Dinosaur" grossed $55.6 million on its first five days. According to Fox News, the film costs $175-200 million to produce. The families who were spending the Thanksgiving together constitute its 79% moviegoers.
"This Pixar group has just been so consistent with high-quality storytelling that appeals to all audiences. This weekend's result is another testament to the way they do things," said Dave Hollis, executive vice president of distribution for Disney. "We are off and running in a great way and also set up for a very, very long run."
The boxing drama "Creed," starring Michael B. Jordan (Apollo) and Sylvester Stallone (Rocky Balboa), got the third place. The film earned $42.6 million over five days. Most of its audience are males over the age of 25.
Rentrak senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian said that the movie is a real crowd pleaser. "This is a movie that is really going to get a lot of attention. It's not just a Rocky movie - it's much more than that," he added.
Meanwhile, James Bond movie "Spectre" hit the fourth place with $30.1 million and "The Peanuts Movie" at the fifth spot with $12.8 million, all based on the five-day Thanksgiving weekend.
