‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Predicted to Smash Opening Weekend Box Office Records; Will J.J. Abrams' Film Beat ‘Avatar’?

J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" is being predicted to become a huge film that could even beat James Cameron's 2009 film, "Avatar."

With less than two weeks before it hits theaters, "The Force Awakens" is projected to earn domestically from $170 to $220 million on its opening weekend, the Huffington Post reports.

However, if the figures drop down low, the latest "Star Wars" film will still be in the list of the top five highest earning opening weekends. It will even double the $84.6 million December opening weekend record made by "The Hobbit: An Expected Journey" in 2012.

On the other hand, if "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" debuts at higher numbers, it will smash box office records and reach the No. 1 spot for the biggest weekend opening ever.
"Jurassic World" is currently the title holder for the biggest opening weekend, making as much as $208.8 million during its initial release in June.

Interestingly, earlier reports said "Jurassic World" director Colin Trevorrow could be the perfect director for "Star Wars: Episode VII." However, the upcoming film is helmed by renowned director J.J Abrams.

The publication noted that it's hard to beat box office records in December because holiday goers come with other expenditure plans, such as travel and shopping. In contrast, summer blockbuster films mostly benefit from the month-long school breaks, which means they could draw in more audience than winter films do.

As "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will hit cinemas on Dec. 18, which is the same release date for "Avatar," viewers and film critics may question if the force was enough to dethrone the blue behemoth the same way "Avatar" defeated the former box office king of the world, "Titanic." Film enthusiasts will be watching out for "The Force Awakens" to break "Avatar's" record as the highest grossing film of all time.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" already sold $50 million pre-ticket sales and is set to open on Dec. 18 in over 4,500 locations in the U.S.
