'Sherlock: The Abominable Bride' Christmas Special: Behind The Scenes Sneak Peek, New Posters And More

In the latest "Sherlock" update, a new behind-the-scenes sneak peek and new posters for "Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" has been released.

According to CNET, BBC teased the premiere of the annual holiday TV event for the most-awaited return of "Doctor Strange" star Benedict Cumberbatch and "The Hobbit" actor Martin Freeman to their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson.

"I think Victorian London and all the sort of trappings of that era are endlessly fascinating," Cumberbatch said. "The sort of ghoulish, nightmarish, fog-laden dark corners and alleyways. The dampness the sort of whole kind of claustrophobic night world that he inhabits, it's a masterful lens on that whole era as well."

In the new teaser video, Cumberbatch said in his dead-pan attitude that he first thought that everyone from the show have gone crazy with the standalone BBC episode. However, the actor praised the era and how the episode came to be.

"Sherlock" co-creator Steven Moffat noted that idea of putting the modern take of the well-loved detectives and their stories in the Victorian era made him and his co-creator Mark Gatiss really curious if they can do it.

"Part of the impulse came from me and Mark [Gatiss] saying 'Wouldn't it be a shame if we never got to see them do it in the authentic setting?'" Moffat added. "So it was irresistible to do a special that is Victorian."

In the official synopsis from BBC, Comicbook.com reported that the Sherlock Christmas episode will be entitled as "The Abominable Bride."

"The Abominable Bride" will transport Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman) in 1895 to solve a mysterious crime. It was up for the detective duo to find the answers behind the Abominable Bride.

The case will follow a certain gentleman named Thomas Ricoletti. It was after he saw the wedding dress-clad ghost of his dead wife. Mrs. Ricoletti previously committed suicide and now, she returns from the dead to get her revenge.

Meanwhile, the outlet also reported about the two special posters which featured a retro look and billing of the cast of "Sherlock."

"Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" is directed by Douglas Mackinnon and written by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Amanda Abbington, Rupert Graves, Una Stubbs and Louise Brealey.

"Sherlock: The Abominable Bride" will air on New Year's Day, Jan. 1 on BBC (UK) and on PBS for U.S. viewers. It will also have a limited release in theaters worldwide.
