Urban Cowboy Update: FOX Passed On TV Pilot

FOX has finally axed the pilot of the supposed remake of John Travolta's 1980 film, "Urban Cowboy."

According to Deadline, the broadcast has decided not to continue with the production of the upcoming FOX pilot. It was said that "Urban Cowboy" is FOX's follow-up series for the success of the music-heavy drama series, "Empire." The supposed pilot was known for reimagining the original movie by adding Latin music to the mix.

Craig Brewer, who was known for his movie "Hustle & Flow," wrote and directed the project. It is produced under 20th Century Fox and Paramount Television. He joined showrunner Chris Levinson with Robert Evans and Sue Naegle as executive producers of the show.

Set in modern-day Texas, the "Urban Cowboy" pilot revolved around "Sense8" star Alfonso Herrera as Kyle and "UnReal" cast member Nathalie Kelley as Gaby. Deadline described Kyle and Gaby as “two star-crossed young lovers, as they pursue their dreams and passions through the sweat of line-dancing in honky-tonks, the grime of the oil refineries and the glamor of modern Texas. It’s about family legacies, starting over, finding true love and the American dream.”

It is based on the 1980 Western-inspired romantic movie starring "Grease" actor John Travolta and Debra Winger which focused on the popularity of country music in that era. Travolta and Winger played the roles of Bud Davis and Sissy. The screenplay was written by the movie's director James Bridges and Aaron Latham from an article in Esquire Magazine.

The outlet reported that Brewer's TV project underwent into the pilot process before it advances to the greenlighting level. The pilot finally led to more commissions regarding the script and other materials, but the network did not pursue it any further.

Aside from Herrera and Kelley, the FOX pilot also starred Jim Belushi, Bryana Salaz, Edward James Olmos, Riley Smith and Lindsey Gort.
