‘Fallout 4’ Beginner’s Guide: A Primer On Perks

Just about every gamer these days has taken a bite out of the marvel that is "Fallout 4." Bethesda's latest open-world RPG offers gamers the realm of virtually infinite possibilities, and with this guide we aim to present the lowdown on one of the game's core elements: Perks.

Those who have played the previous "Fallout" titles will be familiar with the Perks system. Essentially, you can think of these as special abilities - they are things that allow your character perform notable feats that normal people can't do otherwise. Every time you level-up, you have a chance to put points into a Perk of your choosing. There are actually two ways to do this, depending on how you decide: you can upgrade a Perk that your character already has, or you can choose to gain a new Perk entirely.

Of course, your character can't just go around picking a perk whenever s/he wants; sometimes a perk will be unavailable, as indicated by it being grayed out. If this happens, you should check if your character meets the requirements to obtain that particular perk.

It's nigh-inevitable that you'll put points into the wrong perk during your first run, but the good thing about "Fallout 4" is that it has no level cap, so you can (in theory) commit all the mistakes you want and still recover later. Anyway, Polygon still reminds us that it doesn't hurt to consult the structure of the Perk chart every once in a while.

Perks vary in importance (and by "vary" we mean really vary, that is, from super-important to completely worthless), and so, Attack of the Fanboy advises us to choose wisely early on. Just check out what the perk actually does and think about the nature of your character: will it benefit him or her in the long-run?

But still, the best question to ask yourself while playing "Fallout 4" is "Are you having fun?" While we can talk mechanics and min-maxing all we want, at the end of the day, the ultimate question is whether we got the most fun out of the experience or not.

I hope this guide has been helpful, and stay tuned for more guides and updates!
