The future is bright for "The Expanse" as the Syfy series gets renewed by the cable network.
The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that the series has been renewed for another 13 episodes. It will return for another season in 2017. Syfy and Chiller president Dave Howe announced "The Expanse" renewal in a recent statement.
"The Expanse is firing on all cylinders creatively, building a passionate fan base among viewers and critics alike, and delivering on Syfy’s promise of smart, provocative science fiction entertainment. We can’t wait to see where the story takes us in season two,” Howe said.
"The Expanse" is based on Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck's sci-fi novel series written under the pen James S. A. Corey. It follows the journey of Detective Miller (Thomas Jane) who worked alongside ship officer Jim Holden (Steven Strait) to find the suspect behind a young woman's death.
According to the outlet, Alcon Television Group is on the roll as they commissioned the Season 2 script ahead of its debut due to the intensive production schedule. This is the first-ever project from the production company.
"The Expanse" previously premiered its first episode entitled "Dulcinea" on Nov. 23. It was released on various streaming sites including VOD and TV Everywhere and earned 4.5 million viewers. The series, which aired on Dec. 14 on Syfy, got less audience than its streamed episode with only 1.6 million viewers.
The space opera series takes place 200 years in the future. The latest generation of the human race has finally conquered the galaxy and every planet is ruled by separate entities. Tensions began to rise between the higher echelon from Earth, Mars, and the Asteroid Belt and now the entire Solar System is on the brink of war.

"The Expanse" is produced by showrunners Naren Shankar and the creative duo of Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby. The other executive producers are Alcon's Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Sharon Hall and Sean Daniel Company's Sean Daniel and Jason Brown. Ben Roberts and Ben Cook joins the team as producers.
