"Luke Cage" leading star Mike Colter shares the things you can expect from the upcoming "Defenders" crossover series on Netflix.
Marvel reported that the comic series version started off with the Harlem-born Carl Lucas. He lived a dangerous life that involves brawls, gang battles and little cases of theft with his friend, the Stryker. However, their relationship turned sour which led to their bloodthirsty hatred towards each other. Carl was then wrongfully accused of a drug case that lead him to be imprisoned. He was then recruited for a top-secret experiment program which accidentally gave him superhuman abilities.
Colter, who plays the live-action version of "Luke Cage," appeared in seven episodes of "Jessica Jones" in which he played as Krysten Ritter's onscreen lover. "Jessica Jones" Season 1 aired on Nov. 20.
In an interview with Los Angeles Times, Colter finally answered some of the most asked questions regarding the latest collaboration from Marvel and Netflix. The series is currently in production.
"Luke Cage" in costume
Colter said that if ever the fans will see his character's iconic yellow shirt and boots superhero outfit, they might see it in his own series. However, he also noted that their goal is to pay homage to the character but he is sure that it will still be "grounded on realism."
"I'll say it this way. The writers have been very clever and very on point with the way they allowed this to be grounded in realism [while] paying homage to the comic book and what comic book fans know to be their world," Colter said. "It's going to be a unique way of delivering it. But they're going to get what they want eventually."
The "Jessica Jones" aftermath
Colter confirmed that there will be flashbacks as well in "Luke Cage" and this will be catered in a unique way. He then explained that the upcoming series will take Luke uptown with the aftermath of his relationship with Jessica in the previous series.
Musicality
The actor also hinted that music will play a huge part with his journey. It will be influenced depending on the places he will go after his stay in Hell's Kitchen in "Jessica Jones." According to him, the urban genre among other genre will be highlighted as well as the series will be set in Harlem.
"Luke Cage" and societal issues
Colter, whose role marked as the first African-American lead in a Marvel franchise project since its inception, will "subtly" address several issues apparent today.
"It's also about redemption. He's a renaissance man, he's trying to better himself and there's something to be said about someone who's always trying to make themselves better, trying to change. That's what life is about, to me, anyway. That's what life seems to be about for Luke Cage," Colter said.
Developed by Cheo Hodari Coker, "Luke Cage" stars Mike Colter, Mahershala Ali, Alfre Woodard, Simone Missick, Theo Rossi, Frank Whaley and Sônia Braga.
"Luke Cage" will air this year on Netflix.
