Yahoo Screen Shutting Down; ‘Community’ Six Seasons and a Movie Not Happening?

Yahoo! has shut down its video service Yahoo Screen following the $42 million write-down last year. The company is moving all its video content to its other digital magazines.

"At Yahoo, we're constantly reviewing and iterating on our products as we strive to create the best user experience," a Yahoo spokesperson said Monday, according to The Wrap. "With that in mind, video content from Yahoo as well as our partners has been transitioned from Yahoo Screen to our Digital Magazine properties so users can discover complementary content in one place."

With this announcement, fans of the comedy series "Community," from the co-creator of "Rick and Morty" Dan Harmon, might wonder if a movie is still a possibility. Yahoo Screen picked up "Community" when NBC cancelled that show.

Back in August, Harmon said, as per Digital Spy, that six seasons and a movie is still the plan for the series rather than a seventh season. When Kathy Savitt left Yahoo in October as the chief marketing officer, "Community"'s future became bleak. She was instrumental in making Yahoo Screen a home for this Joel McHale sitcom in 2014.

Harmon said, as The Hollywood Reporter reported, "before she was gone, she was the person that anyone could pick up the phone and say, 'Let's make this Community thing happen,' whatever it was, and she's the reason it would get done."

But with Yahoo Screen closing down, the future of "Community" in a movie looks rather much bleaker. Fans could only hope to see the characters of the comedy series reunite again on screen.

Yahoo Screen was launched in September 2013 with about 1,000 hours of shows. It was home for NFL game live-stream in London, licensed content from "Saturday Night Live," and several originals, many of which were too ambitious and led to the company's write-down in 2015.
