Rents Skyrocket as Temporary Residents Flock in Nearby Cities to Get Away From Short-Term Health Effects

Over two months ago, news about the Porter Ranch Methane Leak broke out. Since this issue has not been resolved yet, thousands of residents have vacated their homes because many of them are already suffering from short-term health effects. However, these evacuees who seek temporary homes in some places are being greeted with skyrocketed rents.

L.A Curbed reports that it would take several months for Aliso Canyon Storage Facility in the San Fernando Valley to fix this mess. It has been noted that there are countless residents around the San Fernando Valley who are already suffering from nosebleeds, headaches, and other health effects from inhaling the fumes of Methane gas.

However, as these residents are trying to get away from the pressing health effects, they are now being confronted by a different kind of headaches in finding a temporary home. Rents have been jacked up already. From the average rent of $3,000 or $4,000 a month, it has been found out that "landlords are asking six, seven, eight, nine thousand dollars- double, triple the rent of what it should be."

There are houses that are listed for sale, which are now listed temporarily "on short-term rental sites." However, there are some apartments that are fairly priced. The prices of these apartments are priced under $2000, with 1 or 2 bedrooms.

It is obvious that houses are much preferred by the Porter Ranch residents because they "have children and are used to the larger homes."

Triple Pundit reports that California Gov. Jerry Brown has already declared a state of emergency over LA methane leak. For 2 months and a half, the leak has not stopped. It has been also reported that the Porter Ranch residents have blamed Gov. Brown by not taking action sooner.

There are many reports that the residents have complained for such a long time of the illnesses experienced. These residents have been relocated themselves "about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of downtown Los Angeles."

Say something about the rents that skyrocketed as temporary residents move in nearby areas to get away from health risk that they are facing. Share your thoughts in the comment box below.
