New York Office Gets a 'Hotline Bling' Makeover, Installs a James Turrell Sculpture

Some companies boast of a fully stacked pantry, a Nespresso machine, or even sleeping pods as cool amenities, but a fancy office in Midtown Manhattan has taken company perks to another level. It installed a massive, 24-foot, two-story James Turrell sculpture in the middle of its work space.

Turrell, an American installation artist, is known for his work emphasizing light and space. Many people are now familiar with his amazing work, as seen on Drake's recent video for his hit single "Hotline Bling." Though the artist denied involvement, the Canadian rapper and his models are seen dancing inside a neon-lighted space similar to Turrell's piece entitled "Three Saros."

According to Fast Co. Design, the Manhattan office wanted to apply the same concept for their special recreation room and enlisted the help of Situ Fabrication, the construction arm of a Brooklyn-based architectural firm, to fabricate and install the structure. Situ is known for taking on the most technically challenging projects, such as a CNC-milled wall in Google's NYC headquarters and a projection-mapping installation for Adidas.

For this project, Situ had to first come up with a 3-D model of the office space. Laufs Engineering Design provided the structural design needed to build the walls. They are made from fiber glass-reinforced gypsum, which is a lightweight but sturdy material and can be manipulated into any shape.

Turrell's design is described to be "ethereal" and "immersive." It aims to surround the person inside with a prismatic sense of light and space. Watch the time-lapse video of the construction below:
