There are ways you can survive home renovations without having to lose your cool in the process.
Home renovations can be such a daunting undertaking especially if you think everything is going wrong. Living in a house with so much clutter, mainly caused by remodeling, can also add to the stress you could feel. However, everyone has survived remodeling and so can you.
Leslie Banker, a New York-based interior designer, has provided some tips to survive the sometimes terrifying home renovation. The first thing you need to consider is to move out. Big home renovations could create so much stress because of the noise, clutter, and dirt. If your sanity is more important than say money you would use to rent and temporarily stay out of the house, get out. Maybe there is a friend or family member nearby who could take you in. For small renovations like a bathroom or a small room, place plastic sheaths on your flooring to avoid dust from spreading. This leads to the second tip.
Safeguard the objects you want to retain. If there are floorings you want to keep, make sure they will not be tainted by covering them, just like what was mentioned early on. Roll your carpets and keep them sealed in plastic and stash them at a place clean. If you could detach doorknobs then do so. If not, cover them. Pieces of furniture should be covered as well if you are not planning to store them somewhere else for the time being.
Another important thing to consider is to hire people you trust. If you know and trust people from the renovation business, employ them. You do not want to be getting headaches from uncooperative, lazy contractors. With this said, you should also be able to communicate with your team. If there are inquiries about the renovation, you should always be available to answer.
Most importantly, plan ahead. To get through a home renovation with less stress, build a schedule ahead and follow it religiously. The decisions you have made before the formal remodeling starts should be adhered to at all costs. This will keep you on track. This is why it is also important that during the stages planning, you consult your team already. Also plan about your budget and anticipate additional costs. Always have an excess of money so in case there is an emergency purchase, you will not be knocked for six.
