Penny Marshall to Market Her Upper West Side Apartment for $5.5 Million

Actress and director Penny Marshall is about to leave New York by selling her apartment. She is reportedly planning to live in California full time.

Marshall, who starred on the sitcom "Laverne & Shirley" and the director behind "A League of their Own" and "Big," is going to sell her Upper West Side pad for $5.5 million. Amy Katcher, a broker from Corcoran Group, has the listing.

The property is located at 470 West End Avenue. She bought it just after "Laverne and Shirley" was filmed in the early 1980s, and fell in love with its iron terrace that has the beautiful view of the Hudson River.

Marshall didn't want to have to "pay a fortune to press her nose up against a window when [she] wanted to look out," she wrote in her 2012 autobiography, "My Mother Was Nuts," that is why she went for West End Avenue over Central Park West. It was not really clear what she paid for the apartment, but one thing is for sure, she is aiming for frugality.

The 1,800-square-foot property features two bedrooms, and 1,050 square feet additional external space. It boasts a master bedroom with own fireplace, perfect for those who are looking for some old school luxury. It is in a 13-storey building with 107 units.

"This residence has creative energy, just like its owner," Katcher said.

Penny Marshall studied math and psychology in University of New Mexico. She took it up with Michael Henry, a campus football player in college who became the father of her daughter, Tracy. She married Henry and stopped studying. Their marriage ended a few years later.

Marshall decided to move to Los Angeles and reunited with her brother Gary, a comedy writer, and her sister Ronny, who was a producer and casting director. That was when she made her first break in show business.
