Nexus 6P News & Updates: Users Raise Issues with Rear Glass Panel Due to Spontaneous Cracking

Several Nexus 6P users earlier this week have raised concerns with Google and Huawei's recently released Android smartphone. The complaints mainly involve the phone's rear camera glass covering, which is said to suffer from "sudden shatter syndrome."

According to IB Times, a lot of Nexus 6P users have posted on Reddit and Twitter complaining about the spontaneous breaking of their phone's rear glass panel that covers its rear camera. The users shared that their phone is developing cracks even if it is sitting alone and untouched.

One user reported that a loud "snap" was heard after leaving the phone screen up on the table. After checking the phone, the rear glass was discovered to have cracked, leaving some glass shavings on the table. Another user reported that his Nexus 6P's front glass broke on his recent airline flight.

Based on the photos sent by the users, there are no impact marks visible on the damaged glass, which could indicate the problem is partly a result of poor workmanship, according to IB Times. Nexus 6P has a full metal body which is made from anodized aluminum that quickly reacts to the temperature compared to plastic. It contracts or expands when exposed to temperature, air pressure or humidity. As reported by Android Police, this attribute may also be the cause of the Nexus 6P's design flaws.

According to 9 to 5 Google, another Nexus phone that suffers from the same problem is the Nexus 4 with its back wholly covered with glass. The later version of the phone has tiny nubs on the corner so the glass won't directly touch the surface. Google or Huawei has yet to give their statement regarding this matter, but if this continues, the manufacturer is expected to take proper measures to solve the problem.

Affected phones should be eligible for free repair or replacement given that the Nexus 6P is still covered under hardware warranty. However, it might be a difficult task for the users to convince Google or Huawei that the damage of the unit is not due to accident or mishandling.
