"Outlander" Season 2 is set to premiere in Spring 2016, but its author and creators are now planning a third season and even beyond that. Diana Gabaldon, the American author behind the novels that inspired the hit historical fantasy series, has revealed that the show could go on for years.
"I think they will keep making it as long as people keep watching it," Gabaldon recently told The Scotsman. "People are extremely rabid about it. They complain bitterly about what they see as the delay in putting on the next series as they have no idea how long it takes to make an episode."
The author is currently in Scotland to help with filming of season 2. She reported that the size of the show's studio has doubled since they first worked on season 1.
"They've now got four sound stages, rather than two, so they can actually film four completely different locations in there at the one time," Gabaldon excitedly shared.
This new development proves just how much of a global success the Scotland-based show is. According to the report, "Outlander" is the biggest series in Scotland's film and television industry and has boosted the value of productions in the country to a record-breaking £45 million.
Likewise, Scotland's tourism has also boomed, with thousands of tourists flocking to the locations featured on the show.
Meanwhile, "Outlander" producer Ronald Moore is also thinking beyond season 2.
"I'm very hopeful. We're talking about doing a third season now and I'm pretty sure we're going to get it," Moore told BBC Scotland, as reported by Movie News Guide.
Spoilers from Cinema Blend suggest that the third season will be based on the third book from Gabaldon's "Outlander" series, entitled "Voyager." As the title suggests, season 3 promises major scenes at sea, which will require major production and computer-graphics technology.
"I can't wait to get out to sea. That's what [I like], doing the tall ship section... I want to do the whole sea chase; that whole section is really going to be fun," Moore said.
Produced by Starz, "Outlander" follows the story of Scottish laird Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and nurse Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), after she is magically and mysteriously taken back to the time of the Jacobite rebellion. Heughan and Balfe are currently filming in Prague for season 2, which will show their characters traveling through Paris throughout the season.
