Sony Xperia Z3 Receives New Android 5.1.1 Lollipop OTA Update; Android 6.0 Marshmallow Before End of 2015?

Sony Xperia Z3 lineup is set to receive over-the-air update of firmware version 23.4.A.1.264, the update is based on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop, which brings full Stagefright vulnerability fix.

According to International Business Times, while Sony already released a fix to the vulnerability that gives hackers access to Android devices through MMS, the latest update is still important as it brings the full patch to the exploit. The patch will be available to Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

If the automatic update is enabled on your device and you are connected to the Internet, you will be prompted to download and install the firmware once the update is already available.

In other news, Sony Xperia Z3 can also be updated to Android 5.1.1 Lollipop via custom ROM by MX, and Xperia Z2 via custom ROM by NanoPop.

Meanwhile, you may want to hold off updating if you are not concerned about the security or your MMS is disabled any way. VC Post has reported that Sony Xperia Z3 is set to receive the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update this month.

No official announcement has been released yet, but Android Standard said tech analysts predict a December 2015 update for Xperia Z3 and January 2016 release for Xperia Z3 Tablet and Xperia Z3 Compact. Xperia Z3+ and Xperia Z5 flagships are also set to be updated to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Reports said that Sony Xperia C5 Ultra, Z4 Tablet, Z3+, C4 and M5 might skip the Lollipop update and will receive the Android M update instead.

Neurogadget said that the latest models are likely to get the updates first, so Z5, Z5 Compact and Z5 Premium devices might get Marshmallow first. But since the release is over the air and depends on carrier, it may take time for some to be reached by the roll out.
