'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Box Office: Is the Sequel Going to Be an Oscar Contender?

The World has gotten crazy over the release for the 7th star wars episode, The Force Awakens. To date they have already broken a box office record past the $5 billion mark. Well, why wouldn't it be? Three powerful brand names came along to create the force that totally awakened the moviedom namely:  Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm.

Another thing that impressed the fans is that with this episode of Star Wars, the producers brilliantly incorporated the actors like Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher who also played roles in the former Star Wars sequel. Actor Adam Driver was even quoted in Variety saying that "The Force Awakens is even better than the prequels."

With all these acclamations, Star Wars is rumored to be nominated in the Academy Awards. As observed, Academy has already loosened a bit allowing movies like Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Toy Story 3 and Avatar to be nominated in the past. Looks like the Academy will give way for Star Wars as well, hopefully.  Director JJ Abrams thinks they can have a good chance at securing a place for an Oscar nomination. It was said that the Broadcast Film Critics Association made a survey among its members to see if the movie could be added into the Best Picture Category.

These rumors are still to be found out since it not yet final. "Spotlight and Carol and The Martian are the movies considered as frontrunners in the best picture category. If they will allow, Star Wars to compete with these movies.

The American Film Institute named The Force Awakens as one of the Top 10 Best Movies of 2015. But that does not guarantee a spot since they also did with the movie 'Unbroken,' but that movie did not win any Oscar nominations. How about a nomination for Harrison Ford for being Best Actor in a Supporting Role category?

Until then, we wait for updates.
